Angkor Thom was the royal city and the last capital of the Angkorian empire with Bayon Temple at its centre. In most cases, the four faces on each Bayon Temple tower face in the four cardinal directions.
Built in the 12th century and surrounded by a moat, the well-preserved temple at the centre of Angkor Wat with its 5 lotus-like towers has contributed to the UNESCO World Heritage site listing of the temple complexes of the area.
Banteay Srey is 38 km north of Siem Reap, north of the main temple complexes. Although small, its attractive pink sandstone is covered with intricate carvings that are excellent examples of classical Khmer art.
