Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay is the site of Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, a high security prison from 1934 to 1963. The prison was home to high profile felons such as Chicago gangster Al Capone and is today one of San Francisco's most popular tourist attractions.

Alamo Square is home to the famous painted ladies. These colourful Victorian houses have been featured in numerous movies and television shows set in San Francisco and are some of the most expensive real estate in the city. Downtown San Francisco can be seen from Alamo Square.
