The most populated municipal city in the world, with a population of over 24 million, Shanghai is an amazing metropolis that has been compared with other great cities but stands on its own as the economic powerhouse of Asia, a centre of culture and the arts, a shopper's and gourmet's paradise, and a traveller's delight. From the leafy tree-lined French concession to the vibrant, neon-lit skyline of Lujiazui, the city is full of enticing sights.

Photo 1. Shanghai is the world's most populous city with an estimated 24 million people living there in 2017. It is the largest shipping container port served by the man-made Huangpu river which is a tributary of the Yangtze. Shanghai is the economic showpiece of mainland China and this is evidenced from its spectacular Lujiazui skyline.
Photo 2. Jing An Temple was first built in 247 AD near Suzhou Creek. It was relocated to its current location in 1216. During the cultural revolution it was turned into a plastics factory but returned to its original purpose as a Buddhist temple in 1983. Since that time it has undergone extensive renovations including the construction of a new pagoda. Within the temple is the largest jade Buddha in China at 3.8 metres and has a weight of about 11,000 kilograms.

A wander through the area is delightful and not what you would expect in a country that takes a dim view of such displays.
Photo 7. 1000 Trees . This is a photo of Thomas Heatherwick's iconic 1000 Trees development located on Suzhou Creek in the creative arts district in Shanghai. When it is fully completed it will also house rental units, stores, a hotel, a school, and elements of a park.
Photo 8. Song birds hang along a leafy street in the French concession. It is not uncommon for people to take their songbirds for walks and to gather in local parks so the birds can sing together.
Photo 9. A peaceful pond in People's Park captures a reflection of a restaurant. Shanghai's People's Park is an oasis in a vast city. Locals congregate daily for everything from tai chi, dancing, card and chess games, to marriage markets where parents meet on Sundays to try to find matches for their single adult children.
