Prior to the opening of a permanent entrance at Lakes Entrance ships operating from Melbourne to the Gippsland Lakes were often prevented entry by weather and or the tide instead anchoring offshore in Bass Strait and rowing their passengers and cargo ashore. Steamers from Bairnsdale and Sale met the passengers at Steamer Landing jetty. Today it is a favourite overnight mooring for sailors.
